Animal Kingdom

Much More Than a Zoo

The Animal Kingdom: The newest and at over 500 acres the largest of all Disney Themeparks. The bulk of this beautiful park is taken up by the animal habitats which means that not only do you get to see the animals in very natural surroundings but the amount of walking (though still considerable) is probably no more than you would do in an average day at Epcot. As the name Animal Kingdom suggests, the stars at this park are the animals themselves.

On entering the park, you will find yourself at the Oasis. This lush tropical paradise immediately lets you know that this park is different! Keep your eyes open. There are many things including several species of animals to see here. There are several pathways through the Oasis, all of which lead to a bridge to Discovery Island, where you will find the massive imposing Tree of Life. From there the layout of the Animal Kingdom park is similar to the Magic Kingdom. Discovery Island acts as the hub with paths leading to the various lands:

Camp Minnie Mickey

Africa

Asia

Dinoland U.S.A.

The park has grown over the past few years and now the animals compete for attention with thrill rides (Expedition Everest, Dinosaur, and Kali River Rapids), shows, and a parade. But for me, the animals and lush tropical surroundings still take center stage.

The Animal Kingdom is a park that deserves to be lingered over. Unfortunately, most people rush through the animal exhibits, ride the attractions, and leave. Those that do linger after the bulk of the crowds have left in the late afternoon, will be rewarded with uncrowded pathways and tremendous views of the animal habitats.

As animals tend to be more active in the early morning, late afternoon, and early evening, this time of the day also offers exceptional opportunities for unhurried viewing of animal behavior.

Headline Attractions: Expedition Everest (Asia), Kali River Rapids(Asia), Dinosaur (Dinoland U.S.A.), It's Tough to Be a Bug, (Discovery Island), Kilimanjaro Safaris (Africa).

Don't miss: Kilimanjaro Safaris. Probably the best Safari experience to be had outside of Africa.

Also not to be missed for those who like Broadway style musicals is Finding Nemo - The Musical, the new Animal Kingdom show that has replaced Tarzan Rocks.

If this style of entertainment is your cup of tea then also plan on seeing The Festival of the Lion King. Nobody does this kind of musical theater better than Disney.
