Tom Sawyer Island

Tom Sawyer Island is not an attraction in the conventional sense. It is a kind of giant adventure playground geared around characters and events from Mark Twain's classic book Tom Sawyer.

The only way to reach the Island is by motorized raft. These hold 15 to 20 people and take just a few minutes to reach their destination. For parents, a trip to the island presents an opportunity to find a shady spot and relax while the kids run around and explore.

There is plenty to occupy even the most active kids here: everything from rope and barrel bridges that bounce up and down as you walk across to caves, an old mine, a working waterwheel, and a fort,Fort Langhorne, (named after Mark Twain whose real name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens ) which has all kinds of fun things for kids from air rifles to cannons.

Food And Snacks:

Aunt Polly's Dockside Inn is a pleasant waterfront spot, a great place to relax over an ice cold lemonade. It is also the only place on the Island that sells food- mostly ice cream, strawberry shortcake, sundaes, etc. as well as soft drinks. It operates seasonally and entirely at the whim of Disney. It may or may not be open when you visit.

My Verdict:

If you are not pushed for time this is a great place to get away from the crowds of the Magic Kingdom for a while.

TIP:

Take the short trip to Tom Sawyer Island when you need a little rest and the kids need to work off excess energy. Watch the time. The Island generally closes at dusk.
